Minister Popescu: Romania has a viable gas transmission infrastructure that can contribute to regional energy security
Romania has an operational and viable infrastructure of gas transport which could contribute to the regional energy security, already functioning like an important regional hub of gas supply, stated the minister of energy, Virgil Popescu, who too part on Wednesday in the ministerial Reunion of the International Agency for Energy (IAE) regarding the gas markets and the supply security.
‘During te intervention I said that the present regional crisis has shown the vulnerability of the energy sector to the geopolitical events, in all its dimensions. And even so, the European energy sector has experienced significant changes, which were a starting point for a new model of international cooperation without any precedent in the energy domain, bringing, more than never, in our attention, the energy security and the importance of diversifying sources and energy supply routes. Our country has an operational and viable infrastructure for gas transport which could contribute to the regional energy security.Romania has already functioned as an important regional hub for gas supply by transporting gas to the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary and even to Slovakia’ the minister wrote on his Facebook page.
In the context, the minister of energy considers that in these times, without any precedent, of volatility and transition, partnerships between governments and energy companies remain essential to ensure an open dialogue in an agenda which must stimulate investments, energy security, transition and innovation.
‘At the same time, I told the ministers who were present that our country is still committed and contributes to the stabilization of the European and regional energy security as well as to the desired continuity of energy supply’ Virgil Popescu added.
The ministerial reunion of IAE was chaired by Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of energy in Canada and co-chaired by Jennifer M.Granholm, secretary for energy of the US and the Irish minister Eamon Ryan. The event was organized with the support of the Operational Group of IAE for the monitorisation of the gas market and the supply security (TFG), under the leadership of the executive manager of the organization, Fatih Birol.
