OMV Petrom: We are targeting a 30% reduction in emissions by 2030 compared to 2019

The intensity of the carbon dioxide emissions of our operations dropped last year by approximately 11% to the level of 2019, and until 2030 the company aims at a reduction of 30%, stated Christian Verchere, the general manager of OMV Petrom.

According to the press release, OMV Petrom published the Report for Sustainability for 2022. This offers an overview of the economic, environmental and social impact of the company’s operations, as well as its commitments and progress towards sustainable development.

The quoted source also said that the framework of the company’s sustainability is built around three pillars: environment, society and good governance.

The company entered in a partnership with the Oltenia Energy Complex for the construction of four photovoltaic parks with total capacity of approximately 450 MW with investments of over 400 million euro. With the commissioning of the four parks, Romania’s installed solar power capacity will increase by about 30%.

‘Petrobrazi is the first certified refinery in Romania which produces sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The volumes of SAF produced in Rafinaria Petrobrazi can contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions generated by commercial flights by approximately 70% as compared to the conventional fuel’ the press release says.

In the domain of sustainable mobility, until the end of 2022 there were installed over 100 points of charging for electric vehicles, to contribute to the decarburization of road transport.

In order to decarbonise internal energy consumption, the company continued the installation of photovoltaic panels at its filling stations, reaching 150 units by the end of 2022. The amount of electricity produced by these photovoltaic panels covers up to 25% of a filling station's consumption.

Sustainalytics, an independent ESG research, rating and analysis agency, included OMV Petrom in the top 5% of the oil and gas industry, while EcoVadis, another sustainability rating agency, awarded OMV Petrom Silver Supplier status.

OMV Petrom is the largest energy company in Southeast Europe, with an annual group-wide oil and gas production of around 43 million boe in 2022. The group has a refining capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per year and operates a high-efficiency 860 MW power plant. In the retail petroleum products distribution market, the Group is present in Romania and neighbouring countries through approximately 780 service stations under two brands, OMV and Petrom.
