Transelectrica increased cross-border capacity by 1,000 MW in 2020

Transelectrica announces that as of 1 January 2021 it will ensure a cross-border capacity of 2.800 MW for export and 3.000 MW for imports into Romania with the countries with which it operates interconnected – Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine. At the beginning of 2020, Romania’s cross-border capacity was around 2.200 MW export/import, says the national system operator in a press release.

The company promises that over the next five years it will double cross-border capacity compared to the level at the beginning of 2020, through an investment program that will allow the development of European coupled electricity markets.

Romania, through Transelectrica, is part of the European power grid and has the mission to ensure both national energy security and European energy security. We have important investments in place that will help double cross-border capacity by 1 January 2026 so that it is in line with European requirements,” said C?t?lin Ni?u, CEO of Transelectrica SA.

On December 23, the company announced that it had operated the 400 kV Oradea Sud-Nadab airline, which makes it possible for the entire 400 kV Oradea Sud – Nadab – Bekescsaba (Hungary) section to enter into commercial operation. The 4 million lei investment was completed six months before the contract deadline, with the works being carried out by Electromontaj SA Bucharest. The completion of this section of the line allows the cross-border capacity to be increased by 1.000 MW in relation to Hungary.

The project of the OHL 400 kV Oradea Sud-Bekescsaba (Hungary), a total investment of over 87 million lei, has been partially implemented since 2008, namely the double circuit section, the OHL 400 kV Nadab – Bekescsaba (Hungary) with a length of 60 kilometers, of which 22 kilometers are on Romanian territory, simultaneously with 400 kV Arad – Nadab. The 400 kV Oradea South – Nadab section has a total length of 72 kilometers.

The works were relaunched in August 2020 and consisted of the construction of 14 foundations, the assembly and erection of 15 pillars necessary for the completion of the 400 kV Oradea Sud – Nadab section, which has been in conservation since 2008, due to difficulties mainly related to expropriation procedures. The investment increases the country’s interconnection capacity and helps complete Romania’s 400 kV power ring.
