PM Ponta: The present 8 regions are too big

Premier Victor Ponta stated on Friday in Suceava that he supported the setting up of the region Bucovina and showed that the formula with the present eight regions of development is not the best, as they are too big for European standards.

Asked in a press conference if he supported the setting up of the Bucovina region, Ponta answered affirmatively. ‘As I spent my childhood in Bucovina I am in favour. In fact, the Bucovina region would be a European microregion Bucovina very beautiful. If we sign the agreement of association with Ukraine, in November in Vilnius we may create a European micro-region, the real Bukovina, Bukovina as a whole. In the rest, the moment we reach the future year and talk about regions, we see which is the most sustainable solution, but the message given bz the Regional Department Anti-fraud in Suceava is a message of support for the county and for the region’ Victor Ponta said.

The premier said that, over the last period, several analyses regarding the regionalisation showing that the eight present regions of development are too big, but the counties are too small. ‘The counties are too small, but the eight regions are too big for European standards and probably that one of the possible variants is to have 10 or 12 but I don’t want to get into details as there are local troubles appearing. We should not get to 41 regions’ Victor Ponta.

He showed that each region will have a Court of Appeal and that 99% of the trials will be finalised at the courts of appeal to ease the volume of work in the Court of Cassation and Justice.

He considers that the regions will have to have transferred as many attributes as possible from the ministries. He said that he is a premier who considers that Bucharest should keep as little as possible – foreign policy, the army, the justice, the regulations and the control. ‘The rest of the activities, as little in Bucharest as possible and as many as possible in the territories’ the premier added.
