Andrei Gerea is nominated for Economy Minister

Leader of the deputies of the ruling National Liberal Party (PNL) Andrei Gerea was nominated by the party leaders for Economy Minister, said chairman of the Liberals Crin Antonescu on Tuesday.

'Mr Andrei Gerea, former leader of the parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies, member of the economic commission, was the nomination we made and unanimously voted for by 58 votes of the 58 members of BPN [the national standing bureau]. He is our nomination for the Ministry of Economy,' said Antonescu in the Parliament Palace.

He emphasized the fact that the variant according to which Andrei Gerea should take over as Minister of Economy was discussed with and agreed upon by Premier Victor Ponta.

'It is a very difficult ministry, in general, in a country whose main problem is in the economic field. And even if this ministry, in its current structure, does not have all the levers that are important for the movement of economy, it still has a role as important as its name. A very difficult ministry as, on its agenda, there are very pressing, urgent and complicated subjects such as Oltchim or Cuprumin. A difficult ministry and at the same time a very important one as the policies in this ministry are related to the subject of exploiting mineral resources at present and in the future. And when I am saying this, I am not thinking of Rosia Montana [central Romania] alone, I am thinking of a medium and long-term durable policy on which this ministry and its members are called upon to work,' said Antonescu.

He emphasized the fact that, for Liberals, the Ministry of Economy is one of the most important ministries both when it comes to the governing programme and to the PNL programme and added that reindustrialization was a key concept.

Being leader of the PNL parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies since May 2013, Andrei Dominic Gerea was born on September 8, 1968 in Bucharest.

He is a graduate from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (ASE), Faculty of Cybernetics, Statistics and Economic Informatics (1997). He took specialization courses: 'Management of the Foreign Trade Enterprise' (INDR Bucharest, ASE Bucharest, UNCTAD Geneva, 2001) and 'Professional Sales Techniques' (Achieve Global, 2004).

He started his professional activity as an automation electronic engineer with Automatica SA (1987-88) and continued as an electronic engineer with ICE Felix Computers SA (1988-92); commercial manager, Van Soestbergen SRL (1991-92); merchandise expert with Industrialexport (1993-97), manager for relations with clients, Eximbank Romania (1997-2002); manager for relations with clients, Alpha Bank (January 2002-April 2004), manager of the subsidiary of the Tiriac Bank in the southern city of Pitesti (2002-2004).

He has been a PNL member since February 4, 1990. As a party member he held a number of positions. Since 2002 he has been vice-chairman of the PNL organization of Arges County (southern Romania).

In 2012 he was again elected deputy on the PNL lists. He was vice-leader till May 2013 and since May 2013 he has been leader of the PNL parliamentary group. He is also a member of the commission on economic policy, reform and privatization as well as vice-chairman of the joint special commission of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate on approving the draft law on some measures to accompany the exploitation of gold and silver ores in the in the Rosia Montana area and on stimulating and making easier the development of the mining activity in Romania.

He is married, with two children.

Andrei Gerea: Oltchim privatization, one of my priorities as head of Ministry of Economy

Andrei Gerea, who was nominated by the National Liberal Party (PNL) for Minister of Economy, said on Tuesday that one of his priorities was the privatization of Oltchim. He emphasized the fact that taking over as Minister of Economy was a task honouring him.

'It is a task that both honours me, but also, considering all the difficulties ... is not apt to burden me, but still it impresses me and I hope to be up to the trust they put in me. It is indeed a difficult ministry; all of us are through a difficult time, although Romania started to take an ascending macroeconomic trend at the beginning of this year. The industrial production has been growing for a long time now. I know very well that there are many unsolved questions, although the performance of the previous minister was very good. But I am sure that, together with my colleagues and with people who are still in the ministry, we shall manage to successfully fulfil our tasks,' said Gerea.
