Angela Cristea: EC has a number of intervention tools to respond to the violation of the rule of law principles in Romania.
The head of the European Commission Representation in Bucharest, Angela Cristea, says that Brussels has a number of intervention tools to respond to the violation of the rule of law principles in Romania.
“We will use very carefully the tools available to us … there is the infringement procedure, there is a nuclear option, but we hope we will not get there,” Cristea said for RFI Romania, referring to possible violations of the principles of the rule of law by the authorities.
“We try to focus more on facts and less on statements, that’s very important, but we are very concerned,”she said.
“I expected the magistrates’ protests, because these ordinances were issued overnight without public consultations with the parties involved, and magistrates feel that their independence is threatened.”
Regarding the newly established Special Section for the Investigation of Magistrates, Cristea says that the emergence of this structure, despite the recommendations of the Venice Commission, raises great questions and its “first actions are not such as to calm us.”
Regarding the latest allegations from the ruling parties, according to which the CVM reports allegedly use “manipulated” data, Angela Cristea stressed that all the figures come from public sources, the vast majority of them from the Romanian state institutions. “The rest is manipulation… It would be laughable, if things hadn’t been so sad,” she added.
