Ciolos: Romanians have taken to the streets to defend democracy and the rule of law
Former Prime minister Dacian Ciolos asserts that the Romanians have taken to the streets to defend democracy and the rule of law, adding that these days are not only about abrogation of an Emergency Ordinance of Government (OUG), but about a mature society, morality.
"Nobody, never could rule in Romania behind our backs. Hundreds of thousands of Romanians have taken to the streets to defend democracy, the rule of law, for a strong justice and a society based on values. Hundreds of thousands of Romanians ask for a fair, open, European Romania," Dacian Ciolos wrote on Sunday evening on his Facebook page.
He stated that hundreds of thousands of Romanians demand another kind of ruling, an honest, transparent governance, in the service of the citizens.
"These days are not only about the abrogation of an OUG, but about a mature society that says stop to lies and populism. They are not only about a law written on a paper, they are about morality and collective consciousness, about our future as a nation. Tonight (Sunday - editor's note), hundreds of thousands of Romanians are lighting the country's soul," added Dacian Ciolos.
Protesters gathered on Sunday evening in front of the Government headquarters in Victoria Square lit at the same time, at 21:00, their mobile phone screens and flashlights.
According to some official sources, there are over 250,000 people in Victoria Square and 250.000 în other major cities and european capitals, the biggest protest since December 1989..
Protesters say they would not believe anything until they seen it done. And opinion leaders from among protesters are pointing out on social networks that a postponement of a decision would be no good, as it would allow for even a short while the application of the ordinance, which would decriminalise certain corruption offences.
People are making a terrible noise, using drums, vuvuzelas, whistles, they are waving Romania's and EU's flags, displaying placards with anti-government and anti-PSD messages.Other light messages have been projected on the Government building and the buildings around.
In the meantime, approximately 200 people attended a protest, on Sunday afternoon, outside the Cotroceni Palace, headquarters of presidential administration. The people are on the sidewalk and the gendarmes have surrounded the area with fences.
The people are chanting "Down with Iohannis!" and have placards reading: "Resign!," "We support the Government."
Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Liviu Dragnea announced that the demonstrations are not organized by the party he leads.
"The PSD is not organizing today any meeting or public demonstration. The gather-up messages which appeared on the social networks are not from the PSD," the PSD leader wrote on his Facebook page.
