Citu: Romanians must understand that delaying rates on banks does not mean forgetting about debts
Finance minister Florin Citu advises people who have bank credits to be careful when they request a delay in paying rates on banks for those credits and choose at first a month or two and then extend the period if necessary, in order to avoid future problems.
“Romanians must understand that a delay does not mean a pardon and they must be careful. If we need a delay, we should start with a month or two, to avoid future problems. We are speaking about a nine month delay, but people can use this possibility for one, two or three months, according to their needs and possibilities. We must tell them clearly: delay does not mean pardon. When the delay period passes, debts must still be paid,” Citu said on TVR 1.
He pointed out that this facility is both for people and companies and is both for consumer credits and mortgages and no credit is restricted.
However there will be a few criteria to appear in the Order to be approved by the government on Thursday and a few differences will be made according to motivation.
To benefit from this measure, people interested do not have to go to banks, but can make a statement online.
The National Bank of Romania announced on Tuesday that it would send information letters to all creditors (banks and non banking financial institutions) to confirm the possibility of restructuring credits and the way of applying regulations in force.
Thus, according to central bank representatives, delay from payment (following a general measure or through direct negotiations with clients), determined by the present situation, it should not be associated to a notion of the debtor's financial difficulty. Consequently, the credit must not be reclassified and the bank must not set up provisions for the amounts owed, as a result of restructuring.
