Crimes that have increased in the last year: influence peddling, migrant smuggling, corruption, drug trafficking

Influence peddling, buying influence, migrant smuggling, illegal drug trafficking and consumption are crime categories which registered last year growth as regards the number of defendants indicted, shows the balance sheet of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (Prosecutors’ offices), presented on Wednesday by the Prosecutor General Alex Florenta.

According to the activity report, in 2023, the prosecutors solved 545,600 files, 1.7% more than in 2022, 48,338 indictments and plea agreements were issued.

The number of complaints, applications, reminders and referrals was very high - 492,116.

In terms of the number of defendants - natural persons - brought to trial, there is a decrease of 4.3% compared to 2022, but an increase of 11.9% of defendants - legal persons - brought to trial.

 

Also, the number of defendants (individuals) remanded in custody was 2.8% higher than in 2022.

The following crime categories registered growth as regards the number of defendants brought to trial:

*influence buying (+207, 7%);

*influence trafficking (+52,2%);

*migrants trafficking (+38,2%);

* bribery (+13,8%);

* illicit drug trafficking and consumption (+13,7%);

* child trafficking (+7,6%).

On the other hand, the number of defendants finally acquitted decreased by 11.3% compared to 2022, representing a share of 1.8% of all defendants brought to trial, and the number of cases returned to the prosecutor decreased by 12.4% compared to 2022, representing a share of 0.4% of all cases disposed of by committal.
