CSM: Statements about political influence over judges are extremely serious
The CSM judges section say that statements about political influences over judges from Bucharest Appeal Court and the High Court of Justice are “extremely serious”.
They show their concern and condemn the public expression positioned “outside admissible limits”of the freedom of speech, as protected by article 10 of the European Convention for Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
“This manner of expression affects the independence, image, credibility and prestige of the Romanian judicial system, already involved in an ample effort for reform and fighr against corruption and the consolidation of citizens’ confidence in justice. In this context, the Judges’ Section of the Higher Magistracy Council (CSM) appeals to the media, as opinion makers, to manage any public message in a balanced, reasonable way and to join the action of the judicial system to consolidate its democratic position in society, according to the principles of the separation of powers in the state and to the fundamental human rights,” says the source.
This reaction comes when the press wrote about the decision of the Judges’ Section of CSM to increase the number of court groups of five judges from the Supreme Court thus increasing chances that the case in which PSD president Liviu Dragnea is tried could be given to a favorable group.
