Sibiu – gastronomic destination recommended in 2019 by National Geographic Traveller
Sibiu is the only place in Romania included among the top destinations recommended for 2019 by the National Geographic Traveller magazine, as next year this city will have the status of an European Gastronomic Region.
Journalists from the National Geographic Traveller recommend tourists from all over the world to enjoy next year not only the gastronomic diversity offered by Sibiu, but also the festivals organised here, the beauty of this medieval city and also to visit the oldest museum in Romania, the National Brukenthal Museum, in the historic downtown of the municipality.
The National Geographic Traveller top for 2019 includes 19 recommended destinations: Setouchi, Antarctica, Pittsburgh, Corsica, Cambodia, San Miguel de Allende, West Yorkshire, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Guyana, Oslo, Eritrea, KwaZulu-Natal, Bhutan, Dundee, Uganda, Matera, Indonesia and Sibiul.
Sibiu was nominated in the past ten years in numerous international tourism rankings. It also came to the attention of journalists abroad, especially after being the first city of Romania, in 2007, to have the status of European Cultural Capital. In 2008, the Mayor back then, Klaus Iohannis, announced that Sibiu has reached 1 million tourists. Later, in 2012, Sibiu was the only Romanian city that got three stars, the maximum rating from Michelin, which is the most prestigious tourist guide in the world.
