Eurostat: Romania, Greece rank last in EU by number of ITC specialists
ICT specialists accounted for 4.5pct (about 9 million persons) of the total workforce across the whole of the EU, in 2021, with the lowest percentage of ICT specialists against the total workforce having been recorded in Romania - 2.6pct - and Greece - 2.8pct, the European statistical office Eurostat informs on Thursday.
At the opposite end of the scale were Sweden and Finalnd, where the wright of ITC specialists among the total employed persons is of 8 and 7.4pct respectively. Relatively high shares of persons employed as ICT specialists were also recorded in Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ireland, Estonia, Belgium and Denmark in 2021, all with a percentage exceeding 5pct.
The share of ICT specialists in the total EU employment increased by 1.3 percentage points from 3.2pct in 2012 to 4.5pct in 2021.
The number of persons employed as ICT specialists grew by more than 50.0 % during the period from 2012 to 2021, which was slightly less than 8 times as high as the corresponding increase (6.3 %) for total employment.
Although there was seen a slight increase in the last decate, women still represented less than a fifth of the total number of people working in the sector, in the EU. the countries with the most significant weight of women working in ITC are Bulgaria (28.2pct), Romania (26pct) and Malta (25.6pct), with the lowest such weights being recorded in the Czech Republic (10pct), Hungary (14pct) and Slovakia (14pct).
