PM Ciuca, delegation of Nuclear Energy Agency talk about regional development initiative in nuclear field

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca met on Thursday at the Victoria Palace with a delegation from the Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the main topics addressed being Romania's accession to the OECD, the regional initiative regarding the development in the nuclear field and the collaboration between Romania and the NEA.

According to a government release, Prime Minister Ciuca highlighted the importance Romania attaches to nuclear capabilities and the relevance of the NEA, an agency in which Romania is already represented for the OECD accession process, "a target assumed at national level".

At the same time, the prime minister showed the readiness to develop Romania's capacity to produce nuclear power, using North American technology, an element that customizes our country in the region.

According to the Government, for Romania, both the training of the employees in the field and the development of the energy production and transmission network represent priorities for Romania.

For his part, the Director General of the NEA OECD, William D. Magwood IV, confirmed the availability of support from the perspective of increasing the capabilities to produce nuclear energy, highlighting the positive role that Romania's membership of this agency can play in the process of joining the OECD.

"The parties mentioned the main advantages of nuclear energy, which can reduce carbon emissions as an alternative to Russian gas, including in the industrial field," the release says.

The NEA delegation carries out a working visit to Bucharest with the objective of developing the cooperation between Romania and the Agency for Nuclear Energy.
