Eurostat: Romania's retail trade advanced 15.6 percent in January 2016

The volume of Romania's retail trade advanced 15.6 percent in January 2016 from the same month of the year before, in what represents the largest annual growth in the EU, shows data released on Thursday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

In the euro area, retail trade rose 2 pct, while growth in the EU28 was 2.8 pct. The elements to influence retail trade in the EU28 were the 3.9 pct rise in sales of non-food products, the 2.1 pct increase in sales of food, beverages and tobacco, and the 1.4 pct advance in fuel sales.

In January 2016 compared with the previous month, Romania saw the fourth largest increase in retail trade in the EU, with an advance of 1.9 pct, with only Portugal (5.9 pct), Poland (3.4 pct) and Slovenia (3 pct) ahead of it.

In January 2016 compared with December 2015, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade increased by 0.4 pct in the euro area and by 0.8 pct in the EU28, as an effect of the 1.1 pct advance in sales of non-foods, the 0.7 pct growth in sales of food, beverages and tobacco, and the 0.5 pct increase in fuel sales.
