ForMin Aurescu, about past situation on Embassy of Israel: It cost us non-permanent membership in Security Council
Romania's stance concerning the Embassy in Israel "has not budged a single millimeter", but past public discussions about a possible move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem have "cost" our country the non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu stated.
"Romania's stance has not budged a single millimeter. Not even during the project did it change, because the president of Romania is the one who decides Romania's foreign policy, according to his constitutional prerogatives, and the position of the president of Romania has not changed at all, not even by a millimeter, throughout this period," the Foreign Affairs minister on Tuesday told private broadcaster Digi 24.
He talked, instead, about the need to counteract the "extremely harmful effects that certain public announcements have had on several occasions". "In foreign policy, the partners's trust and reputation are very hard to gain, but they can be extremely easy to lose and this episode has cost us the candidacy for the non-permanent membership in the Security Council," he stressed.
Minister Aurescu mentioned the traditional partners of Romania, who according to him, said: "We understand and have full confidence in the position Romania expresses and which is the position of the President of Romania, but a question mark is raised with these positions at parliamentary or governmental level, at a certain point".
"This situation has been extremely difficult to manage," the minister added. According to Aurescu, "there is no intention at this time to make such a move".
