ForMin Comanescu had a meeting with heads of diplomatic missions from Arab states accredited to Bucharest
Romania's Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu on Thursday reiterated Romania's support for the edification of a security and stability environment in the Arab world as well as for the identification of political solutions for the crises in the area, speaking also in favour of efforts being coordinated in order to fight against the scourge of terror.
In a press statement released on Thursday, Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) says Comanescu had a meeting the same day with heads of diplomatic missions from Arab states accredited to Bucharest - Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar and Tunisia.
"The meeting allowed for a useful exchange of opinions on actual ways of diversifying cooperation between Romania, the European Union and the Arab world, as well as on current affairs, with emphasis on the latest security developments in the Middle East and Northern Africa. The attendees highlighted their shared wish to consolidate political dialogue and sectorial cooperation amidst the ongoing developments that are reshaping the international political stages," says MAE.
The Romanian chief diplomat underscored the importance of dialogue at the level of foreign ministries and other ministries as well as among business communities and civil society leaders.
"Comanescu mentioned the need for imparting pragmatism to the bilateral relationships, with emphasis on the development of economic cooperation. Special importance was attached to interpersonal exchanges and academic cooperation as means for better mutual understanding and the edification of an open cooperation climate buttressed by dialogue and mutual respect. The Romanian foreign minister underscored the usefulness of an advanced exchange of opinions on democratic processes, emphasising the relevance of peculiarities of the states in the affected region being observed," reads the MAE statement.
MAE quotes the ambassador of Qatar as emphasising the historical and cultural ties between Romania and the Arab states, in his capacity as doyen of the Arab diplomatic group, as well as the interest of the group in expanding cooperation with Romania and the European Union in the economic, scientific and travel areas.
"Also discussed at their meeting were topics of major interest on the world agenda, including global terror threats and the need for a coordinated response to the current challenges against world peace and prosperity," says MAE.
