Romania, among states with largest number of ECHR trials

Romania ranks third in the top of states with the highest number of trials at the European Court of Human Rights in which we find at least one infringement of the European Convention of Human Rights. The president of the court, Guido Raimondi, reviewed at the annual press conference, the 2015 activity and considered the situation satisfactory, cases with a single judge being practically eliminated, according to a press release of Thursday.

Until the end of 2015, the number of unsolved cases was 64,850, on the drop by 7% compared to the end of 2014, when there were 69,900 unsolved cases.

The European Court for Human Rights published the annual activity report and statistics for 2015. States with the highest number of trials in which at least one infringement of the COnvention is found are Russia (109 cases), Turkey (79), Romania (72), Ukraine (50), Greece (43) and Hungary (42).

On December 31, 2015, most unsolved cases were against Ukraine (21.4%), Russia (14.2%), Turkey (13%), and Italy (11.6%). Half of the priority cases were against Hungary or Russia.

The president of the Court pointed out that considerable efforts must be made and close cooperation is needed with member states, in the spirit of shared responsibility. President Raimondi showed the need that every member state made sure that endemic problems were solved at domestic level, rather than be brought in front of the European Court.
