Geoana: Romania should join NATO partners about warships made in France for Russia
Romania should join its US and NATO partners about the purchase by NATO of warships made by France for Russia, PSD senator Mircea Geoana declared in a press release.“In the context of the conflict in the Black Sea area and of the unpredictable attitude of the Russian Federation, Romania should join the position of NATO allies on canceling the sales of the two warships which France should deliver to Russia. NATO should find a solution to buy or rent them,” Geoana said.
According to him it is our duty as American and NATO partners to identify reasonable solutions which should not allow the Russians’ additional supply with modern war technology.“Romania should approach this topic in the talks with the US Defense Secretary and place it as priority on the NATO agenda together with Bulgaria and Turkey. We understand the financial part of the transaction and the importance of defense industry for every country, but the collective defense of NATO members should prevail in this case. That is why I join the action of American congressmen who demand the cancellation of the contract between France and Russia for the supply of the two warships,” the PSD senator showed.
One of the two Mistral ships was intended for the Black Sea fleet and should have reached Sevastopol by mid 2015.“The Mistral ships made in France mean modern war technology which Russia would have had access to. Moreover, one of those ships should have reached Sevastopol harbor in the Black Sea, increasing Russian military capacities close to the Romanian border. Therefore it it in Romania’s direct interest that the warships did not reach the Russians, but for that there should be a close collaboration between NATO states bordering the Black Sea - Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria,” the senator concluded.
