Georgian PM, Irakli Garibashvili, in his first official visit to Romania

Georgian Prime Minister, Irakli Garibashvili, on Friday stated at the Government House in Bucharest that the main priority of the Government in Tbilisi is to finalize talks on the accession to the European Union, also adding that the authorities in Bucharest have very much supported and continue to support this mission of Georgia.

"One of the main items on our agenda today was related to the problems having to do with our country's accession to the EU and NATO. It is with respect to this that I want to thank you for your concrete actions so far. I also want to emphasize that Romania was the first EU member state that ratified, after just a couple of days from our signing it, the pre-accession treaty with the European Union [...] My Government's main priority is to finalize talks about the accession to the European Union. Both Romania and the Prime Minister have supported us and still support us in this respect," the Prime Minister of Georgia said at a session of joint statements held with Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Irakli Garibashvili also mentioned that during the talks with the Romanian Prime Minister they also approached the regional situation.

"Of course that we discussed security issues, the situation in Ukraine and in the region, as well as about Georgia's situation (...) I want to emphasize that on the topic of ensuring security, which is a matter that concerns us greatly, Romania's support was considerable," said the head of the Executive in Tbilisi.

He also said that the bilateral relations between Georgia and Romania have become stronger in time, a process that will also continue in the future.

"Our economic relations have also developed and will continue to develop, since this is a priority of our Government. With respect to this, we discussed about joint projects we will conduct together in the field of energy, transportation. We are speaking of the AGRI project [The Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector], about the cooperation between the ports of Batumi and Constanta," specified Irakli Garibashvili.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Friday stated, after his talks with Georgian counterpart Irakli Garibashvili that, although Romania has always supported the Republic of Moldova the most, he believed our country has "the interest and duty" to not forget Georgia, a country that knew how to stand beside the EU and NATO, despite the very difficult regional context.

"All countries in the European Union speak of and support - and that's very good - Ukraine. Romania has always supported the Republic of Moldova the most, but I believe that it is our interest and duty to not forget about Georgia either, a country that was brave enough to stand beside the European Union and NATO, while facing a very difficult regional context, and to support the Georgian people,' Ponta told a joint conference he held with his counterpart in Tbilisi.

The head of the Executive also reaffirmed that "Romania is one of the most determined supporters of Georgia's European Union and NATO integration" and specified that the two countries are also developing joint economic projects.

"And I refer here to the energy field and to such projects such as the AGRI [The Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania Interconnector] and other energy projects that we have been able to carry out in the new regional context. Moreover, the two agriculture ministers, who also participated in our meeting, have established an extremely important cooperation in this field. I especially have in mind the assistance that Romania already granted to the Republic of Moldova in developing legislation, the agricultural system to observe the European standards, for we want to do the same thing with Georgia," said Ponta.
