German Chancellor Merkel, Romanian President Iohannis have telephone conversation
President Klaus Iohannis had on Friday a telephone conversation with the Chancellor of Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, at her initiative, on which occasion the two leaders evoked the excellent stage of the special relationship, of strategic nature, which Romania and Germany share and discussed the consolidation and deepening the bilateral political dialogue, as well intensifying the cooperation on European topics.
"The Romanian President showed that our country remains, on regional level, a confident partner, one of the most important pillars of stability. In the context of complex crises on international level, cooperation between Romania and Germany encountered a real boost, both within the EU, as well in NATO, this trend must also continue for the future. President Klaus Iohannis sent, on this occasion, to the German partner a firm message on his engagement for continuing the fight against corruption in Romania, with the aim of building a mature and solid democracy. The President of Romania underscored the complex nature of this process and also mentioned the positive conclusions of the recent report of the European Commission regarding the registered progresses of Romania under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) for the consolidation of judiciary system and fight against corruption,"shows a press release of the Presidential Administration sent on Friday.
According to the quoted source, the German Chancellor expressed full support for the continuation of the anti-corruption fight in Romania, and voiced concern about the possibility that certain steps affecting the course Romania has joined in fighting this phenomenon.
President Klaus Iohannis and Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed also about the most important current issues on the European agenda, but also about the future of the European Union, particularly in preparing the EU informal Summit in Malta (February 3) and the anniversary Summit in Rome (March 24-25), marking 60 years since the signing of the Treaty of Rome, the press release shows.
Likewise, the two high officials agreed on intensifying the cooperation between Romania and Germany in European matters, including in the context of the reflection process on the future of the European project, on which both states share similar positions.
