German President starts today an official visit to Romania

Germany's President Joachim Gauck is expected on an official visit to Romania, Monday through Wednesday, at the invitation of his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis.

On Monday, Iohannis will hold talks with Gauck at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace on how to intensify strategic ties between Romania and Germany and how to consolidate commercial exchanges.

The Romanian Presidential Administration says the two heads of state will seek to identify the most efficient ways to develop and intensify bilateral relationships, consolidate the dynamics of political dialogues, further trade, as well as discuss the important part of the German community of Romania, along with the Romanian community of Germany, which is one of the best integrated communities in the German labour market.

"President Iohannis will underscore Romania's interests in intensifying its strategic ties with Germany, including with the federal lands. As far as the economic component of the bilateral relationship is concerned, Romania's president will underscore the need for further consolidating it starting from the fact that Germany is Romania's first foreign trade partner, generating one fifth of Romania's total foreign trade, and the third foreign investor in Romania's economy."

On Wednesday, the two presidents will be attending a meeting of German and Romanian business people to discuss how to continue the development of the economic bilateral relationships, including investment.

In his conversation with Gauck, Iohannis is expected to introduce Romania's assessment of the management of complex challenges, both internal and external, currently facing the European Union and its neighbourhoods. The talks will also include an exchange of opinions on the incoming NATO summit meeting, with Iohannis emphasizing the need for a balanced consolidation of NATO's entire eastern flank.

Gauk's schedule also includes a trip to Sibiu, where the two presidents will meet leaders of the local German community, and tour the Brukenthal High School and the Cisnadie fortified church.

"On Tuesday, June 21, His Excellency Mr. Joachim Gauck, President of the Federal Republic of Germany and Mrs. Daniela Schadt will visit Sibiu. Throughout the entire schedule of the visit to our city the high-ranking German official will be accompanied by His Excellency, President of Romania Mr. Klaus Werner Iohannis, and by Mrs. Carmen Iohannis," the statement said.

According to the document, Sibiu interim mayor Astrid Fodor said that the agenda of the visit also includes an official meeting at the City Hall.

"It is an emotional visit that honours us. Two presidents will be present in Sibiu: President of the Republic of Germany, Mr. Joachim Gauck who comes to get acquainted with the city and its people, and President of Romania, Mr. Klaus Iohannis. The program also includes an official meeting at the Sibiu City Hall," Fodor is quoted as saying in the statement.

President Klaus Iohannis and Mrs. Carmen Iohannis, as well as Sibiu Mayor Mrs. Astrid Fodor will welcome the German delegation at noon at the Sibiu City Hall. The distinguished guests will be invited to the City Hall Atrium, where President Gauck will sign the guestbook.

The schedule also includes visits to the Samuel von Brukenthal National College, the Evangelical Church in Huet Square, a short walk through the city's central markets and a meeting with the German community at the headquarters of the Germans' Democratic Forum of Romania, the Sibiu City Hall informs.
