Health Ministry asking for activation of EU Civil Protection Mechanism for NmAb treatment

Romania's Ministry of Health on Friday called on the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) to activate the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism to secure neutralising monoclonal antibody (NmAb) treatment for 40,000 COVID-19 patients.

"There are promises of support from other member states for this treatment as well. I spoke yesterday with Mrs Stella Kyriakides, the European commissioner for health, about our intention to activate the Civil Protection Mechanism in order to supply the medicines needed to secure the treatment of our patients," Health Minister Cseke Attila is quoted as saying in a press statement.

The Ministry of Health points out that amid the ongoing fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic it is necessary to secure access to treatment with neutralising monoclonal antibodies for mild to moderate COVID-19 cases.

On Tuesday, Romania received a donation of 5,206 vials of antibodies from Italy and distributed them to 134 hospitals for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
