The deputy general secretary of NATO, Mircea Geoana, confirmed on Saturday that his mandate in his position was extended with one year, until October 2023.

I am honored by the decision of the general secretary Jens Stoltenberg to extend my mandate with one year, until October 2023’ wrote Mircea Geoana on his Facebook account.

Two yearsa go, on 15th October 2019, I took over the position of Deputy General Secretary of NATO.A great honour, but a challenge as well, to be the first leader from Central and Eastern Europe to occupy such a position’ said Geoana, mentioning that ‘ there were two intense years, full of challenges, but with important satisfactions’.

He says that, by the extension of the mandate, he will ‘ be able to contribute to the negotiation, adoption and implementation of the new Strategic Concept and the 2030 NATO Agenda’.

Nothing more important than to ensure the adaptation of our Alliance to an environment of security profoundly modified and to continue to protect ourselves against any threats to security and the prosperity to the 30 allied nations and one billion citizens, whose trust makes our success essential’ writes the deputy general secretary of NATO in his message.
