International award to Romanian midwife

Romanian midwife Zoica Radu was awarded by Midwives4all, an initiative by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, for her excellence in midwifery and her contributions to maternal and newborn health in Romania, a press release sent to ACTMedia by the Embassy of Sweden in Bucharest informs.

I am very honoured and grateful to receive this award and I am also proud that my over 40 years of practice within midwifery is recognized and awarded by an international initiative. I hope that midwives in Romania will feel encouraged to further pursue their important work in order to provide high quality midwifery services for every woman in the country”- the laureate stated.

Swedish Ambassador Anneli Lindahl Kenny further emphasized the significance of the work by Radu, “Ms Radu has not only helped many women during her years of practical midwifery work, she has also been a great source of knowledge for younger generations learning the occupation. Her work has been a substantial contribution to the Romanian sector of midwifery and she still serves as an inspiration in her role as a volunteer for AMI (Romanian Independent Midwives Association)”.

The Midwifes4all initiative is aimed at creating engagement and a greater discussion on the benefits of investing in the midwifery workforce as well as highlighting the benefits of evidence-based midwifery. The global campaign also awards skilled midwives, which have worked to improve woman and newborn health in different areas of the world.

The award, signed by Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Margot Wallström and Isabella Lövin, Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister, was handed over to Ms Radu at a ceremony at the Swedish Embassy in Bucharest on Friday afternoon.
