Justice Minister Tudorel Toader met on Tuesday at the European Parliament headquarters in Strasbourg with First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, among the topics discussed being the course and the current stage of the justice laws, as well as the amendment of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to a press release of the Justice Ministry, another topic tackled during the meeting refers to the Constitutional Court's final decision regarding the integrity in exercising public positions.

"As regards the justice laws, the Justice Minister presented the current stage and the steps covered in relation to the three draft laws, the laws adopted and the legislative solutions found as unconstitutional. As regards the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, the Justice Minister presented the amendments consisting of transposing the national legislation of the Directive 2016/343/EU of the European Parliament and the Council of 9 March 2016 on the strengthening of certain aspects of the presumption of innocence and of the right to be present at the trial in criminal proceedings and the Directive 2014/42/EU of the European Parliament and the Council of 3 April 2014 on the freezing and confiscation of instrumentalities and proceeds of crime in the European Union, as well as the amendments intended to reconcile the provisions in the codes with the decisions of Romania's Constitutional Court," the Justice Ministry release specifies.

Moreover, with regard to the provisions of the Law for the amendment of the Law No.176/2010 regarding the integrity in exercising public positions, for the amendment and completion of the Law No.144/2007 on the setting up, oraganisation and functioning of the National Agency for Integrity (ANI), as well as for the amendment and completion of other normative acts, Tudorel Toader mentioned that the law was adopted so as to reconcile the legal provisions with the Constitutional Court jurisprudence on the matter, the release further reads.
