Moldova participates in Ukraine drills despite Dodon’s interdiction
A contingent of 57 militaries from Moldova will participate in multinational drills in Ukraine, next to forces from 14 NATO members, despite the fact that Igor Dodon, Moldova’s president, forbade the participation of Moldova’s troops in the event, the website of Radio Chisinau station informs.
The president was against the presence of Moldova in the applications by suspending the government decision and asked that the people who disregard the decree should be punished.
A contingent of the National Army of Moldova, made of 57 militaries, participate, over September 7-23, in “Rapid Trident 2017” instruction stage held at the International Peacekeeping Centre in Yavoriv, Ukraine, the Defence Ministry from Chisinau announced.
The participation of militaries from Moldova in the drills was in the centre of the political agenda from Chisinau, when Igor Dodon forbade it. However, the executive met on Wednesday and approved the participation of the contingent of militaries by government decision.
Igor Dodon used a Constitution provision which allows him to suspend government decisions which are against the law, until the adoption of the final decision of the Constitutional Court. However, the decision was published yesterday in a special decision of the Official Monitor and the militaries went to Ukraine.
Dodon’s spokesperson announced on Thursday that the head of state decided by order that a control be made in military units to check presence and make necessary decisions and punish guilty parties.
In the meantime, there are question marks about the juridical power of the decree signed by Igor Dodon by which he suspended the government decision. Sources from the Constitutional Court told Radio Chisinau that at least in the first part of the day the institution was not informed, therefore the government decision cannot be considered suspended.
Moldova’s effective in the Ukraine drills is made of militaries of peacekeeping Battalion 22 and “Moldova”Brigade 1. About 2500 militaries from ten countries participate in “Rapid Trident 2017”.
