În Vienna, ForMin Aurescu presents Romania's achievements in nuclear security
Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu on Monday co-presided the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS 2020), which took place in Vienna, under the aegis of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in which context he presented Romania's achievements in the nuclear security field and the cooperation with IAEA.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Minister Aurescu opened the works of the ministerial segment of the conference, alongside the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and the co-president on the Panamanian side, the Viceminister of Foreign Affairs, Federico Alfaro Boyd.
In his intervention, Bogdan Aurescu reviewed the steps taken in the past year related to the conference and pointed out Romania's role in the negotiation of the Ministerial Statement, alongside the co-president and the Secretariat of the IAEA.
"The Ministerial Declaration adopted at ICONS 2020, through consensus, is the result of a long process, which started with the meeting of the IAEA's Board of Governors in March 2019. We had a concise document in front of us, looking into the future, which reflects our political will and adds value to the process of consolidation of nuclear security at global level," stated the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, quoted in the release.
Bogdan Aurescu presented Romania's achievements in the nuclear security field and the cooperation with the IAEA, carried out by the national regulatory authority - the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN) and the Nuclear and Radioactive Waste Agency (ANDR) in Bucharest.
"The head of Romanian diplomacy mentioned the designation by the IAEA of the Nuclear and Radioactive Waste Agency (ANDR) in Pitesti as the International Centre of Excellence based on Research Reactors (ICERR) for a period of five years, highlighting once again Romania's commitment to IAEA's mission and values. Moreover, the Minister of Foreign Affairs underscored the expertise gathered by the "Horia Hulubei" National Institute of Research and Development in Physics and Nuclear Engineering (IFIN-HH) in dismantling research reactors, organising training courses for the representatives of the authorities in charge with the nuclear field and nuclear forensic science," reads the release.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs had meetings with the Director General of the IAEA and the US Secretary for Energy.
