Orban: probably over 30% of the economy is affected by coronavirus

Premier Ludovic Orban stated that, most probably, over 30% of the Romanian economy is affected by coronavirus,  but he said that he is not in favour of the austerity measures.

‘At present a prognosis based on the data given by the National Institute for Statistics is under work in order to fund the budgetary rectification. I can already tell you that an extremely important percentage of the economy, probably over 30% of the economy is affected by coronavirus, with a clear risk for the reduction of economic growth, reduction of income to the state budget, social insurance, including the unemployment budget. Practically, the blow given to the economy is a very hard blow and due to this we have started an ample process of consultation of the business environment on activity domains, to make evaluations, scenarios and especially to prepare the moment of coming back to normality which could allow the resumption of activities’ Ludovic Orban said at Digi24 on Thursday night.

‘I am not in favour of austerity measures. It was clear that the austerity measures did not offer a solution for the last crisis, on the contrary, they delayed the economic coming back and maybe they increased the dimension of the crisis. I think that a purchasing power of the population must be kept, I think that there should be consumption, demand to be assured, some injections of financial resources must be made to certain domains which could help the restart of the engine’ Orban said.

‘We try to keep balance in these measures, not to generate too high costs, on the other hand, we cannot create income reductions which could affect the global demand on the domestic market. We want the Romanians to come back to work as soon as possible, to go back to normal life, to buy cars, houses, household goods.:Life must go back to normal, we should not be scared, frightened and we do not think not to improve our life, not to stop spending money, on the contrary, we have to go back to normal as soon as possible’ Orban said.
