Romania raises international debt ceiling to 41 bln euro in 2020-2022

Romania raised by 10 billion euro to a total of 41 billion euro ($44.3 billion) the borrowing ceiling under its Medium Term Notes (MTN) programme for international markets during the 2020-2022 period, according to a government decree published in the Official Gazette.

Romania can borrow the funds at any time, in euro or in any other currency, reads the decree which was published in the Official Gazette on Thursday.

The money raised on international markets via the programme will go to cover Romania's gross financing needs for 2020, 2021 and 2022, the government added.

Romania launched the MTN programme in 2011.

During 2012-2020, the ministry sold foreign issues worth 30.6 billion euro, the government said in a footnote to the decree.

For 2020, the finance ministry plans to issue eurobonds worth about 6 billion euro.

Year-to-date, the ministry has sold some 18.5 billion lei ($4.14 billion/3.83 billion euro) and 150 million euro worth of government bills and bonds and has tapped foreign markets for 3 billion euro of 2032 and 2050 Eurobonds.
