President Iohannis promises Moldovan PM Filip support on the European path
President Klaus Iohannis welcomed at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace on Tuesday Republic of Moldova Prime Minister Pavel Filip, saying that a serious commitment of the government of Moldova to the reform area is necessary, while Moldova resuming dialogue with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an important step as well.
"President Klaus Iohannis gave assurances to Prime Minister Pavel Filip about Romania's support, both on a bilateral and on a European level, but showed that, at the same time, it is necessary for the Moldovan Government to have a serious commitment to the area of reforms, guaranteeing the rule of law and economic progress, as well as to implementing its European engagements. A first important step is resuming dialogue with the International Monetary Fund for signing a new agreement, essential for the economic stability of the Republic of Moldova," reads a Presidential Administration release.
During the talks, Iohannis also showed that the formation of the new Government of Moldova represents an important step for overcoming the political crisis in Moldova and for solving the stringent issues facing the country. Thus, he showed that re-establishing the political, economic and social balance is essential for implementing the necessary reforms and the commitments pledged under the association agreement with the European Union.
The Presidential Administration also says the Moldovan PM presented the situation in his country and gave assurances about the commitment of the new government of Moldova to take the necessary measures to stabilise the political, economic and social situation and continue reforms. Filip informed on the main measures that are going to be taken in the near future and thanked Romania for its constant support.
President Klaus Iohannis also said that Romania stands next to the Republic of Moldova and supports its European path."Romania is definitely alongside the Republic of Moldova. We want to support you on your European path, and I am sure that together we will find the best approaches," Iohannis told Filip at the beginning of their meeting at the Cotroceni Palace, the seat of the Romanian Presidential Administration.
"You, Mr. Prime Minister, and you, vice prime ministers and ministers, have taken over a difficult mandate, in hard times, but I think this difficult tenure can be also beautiful. You have a great opportunity, through firm reforms carried out, to restore Moldova's political, economic and financial stability, and ultimately restore Moldovan citizens' confidence of a government being there to deal with Moldova's and Moldovans' problems," the President asserted.
"Welcome! Shortly after your appointment, you have decided to pay a visit to Bucharest. I am glad about being able to receive you at Cotroceni. It is, in my opinion, a sign that you want to carry on the close relations between the Republic of Moldova and Romania. I am very happy about it," President Iohannis greeted PM Filip.
The Moldovan premier had already met on Tuesday his Romanian counterpart Dacian Ciolos, and was also to meet Senate Speaker Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Chamber of Deputies Speaker Valeriu Zgonea.
