President Iohannis to meet the delegation of the Venice Commission on Tuesday
President Klaus Iohannis meets on Tuesday at Cotroceni Palace the delegation of the Venice Commission. According to the agenda of the head of state, the meeting will take place at 12:00.
On 17 May, the head of state sent that it is useful to organise as quickly as possible some direct consultations between the representatives of the public authorities and the civil society of Romania with the experts of the Venice Commission with regards to the laws of justice.
‘Taking into consideration the desire to get to legislative solutions deeply adequate to the constitutional framework and the European standards which refer to the independence of justice, the president of Romania considers as useful to organise direct consultations between the representatives of public authorities and the civil societies of Romania with the experts of the Venice commission ’ showed the presidential administration at that moment.
The head of state required on 3 May a point of view from the Venice Commission with regards to the three laws passed by the parliament concerning the statute of the judges and prosecutors, the judicial organisation, the organisation and functioning of the Superior council of magistrates.
On 26 April, the Parlimentary meeting of the European Council notified the Venice commission with regard to the same laws.
‘The two requests refer to normative acts which have not come in power and include amendments with major impact on the functioning of the judicial system and the independence of justice in Romania’ mentioned the presidential administration.
In the letter sent to the president of the Venice commission, the head of state showed that the final version of the three laws of justice are not ‘compatible with the constitutional framework of Romania, or with the European standards regarding the independence of justice’.
The head of state mentioned that, before promulgating them and due to the special importance of the opinions of the Venice commission, in general, and especially for the constitutional court of Romania, he decided to send the laws to CCR and to the Venice Commission.
Similarly, he mentioned the fact that he notified the constitutional court to cooperate with the consultative body in matters of constitution of the European Council and make possible the decision to rely on the opinion of the Venice Commission.
