Report on Romanian Embassy's tentative relocation to Jerusalem ready in two weeks

Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu said on Monday that the assessment by the Foreign Ministry of the possible relocation of Romania's Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will be completed within two weeks, and that the report will be presented to political decision-makers, with President Klaus Iohannis having the final word in this regard.

The Romanian chief diplomat stressed that political consensus on this subject is necessary.

"We are working on the economic assessment, the report will probably be ready in about two weeks," Melescanu said when asked in Parliament about the stage of talks on the relocation of the Romanian Embassy in Israel.

Asked whether it's the pros or cons of the relocation that currently tip the scales, Melescanu replied: "There are both advantages and disadvantages. It's essential that we weigh them and this will be done at a political level."

The Foreign Minister said that he had no further talks with Premier Viorica Dancila or the Presidential Administration on the subject.

"We intend to do the analysis and propose alternatives. (...) I will present a written report to all political decision-makers who are involved in the adoption of our foreign policy: the President, the heads of the Chambers of Parliament and the Prime Minister," Melescanu said.

"From our point of view, the assessment should present political decision-makers the current state of play, but the decision will be political," said the ForMin, stressing that this should be a consensual decision by all political factors involved.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs added that the relevant memorandum can be declassified if there is consensus in the Government in this respect.
