Romania and Bulgaria the last in the EU as regards the productivity of the resources
Romania (0;70 euro/kg) and Bulgaria (0.68 euro/kg) occupy the last places among the member states of the EU in the ranking regarding the productivity of resources, which measures how efficiently natural resources are used by the economy, according to Eurostat report, published on Tuesday.
Among the European states the highest levels of productivity of resources in 2016 were reported in Italy (3.98 euro/kg) and the Netherlands (3.96 euro/kg), followed by Luxembourg (3.65 euro/kg), the UK (3,59 euro/kg) and Spain (3,17 euro/kg).At the other end where productivity is under one euro/kg is Bulgaria (0,68 euro/kg), Romania (0,70 euro/kg), Latvia (0,82 euro/kg), Estonia (0,85 euro/kg) and Finland (0,95 euro/kg).
In the EU, the productivity of the resources went up to 2.07 euro/kg in 2016 from 1.47 euro/kg, a raise of 41% in real terms. The productivity of the resources measures how efficiently natural resources are used by the economy and shows if the economic growth is compatible to a more efficient use of the natural resources.
The level of productivity of the resources varies in the member states of the E, depending on the natural resources of a country, the diversity of the industrial activity, of the role played by the services sector and the construction activities , consumption patterns and energy resources.
The quantity of resources used by an economy is important for the environment, from the extraction of the natural resources for production activities and consumption to the materials left in the environment, such as waste or air or water emissions, Eurostat says.
The productivity of the resources measures the total quantity of material directly used by an economy in relation to the GDP.
