Romania's consular office in Solotvino, Ukraine, will become operational this summer

Romania's Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu and Governor of Ukraine's Transcarpathia region Gennady Muskal on Friday attended the opening of Romania's consular office in Solotvino, Ukraine.

"The citizens of our countries on both banks of the Tisa River will be able to meet more often, think about and come up with projects of shared interest so that they may contribute to an even stronger consolidation of the relationships between Romania and Ukraine. (...) This is the main aim of the office: to contribute to the development of the Romanian-Ukrainian ties and of contacts between the citizens on both banks of the Tisa River," Comanescu said after the ribbon was cut.

He added that the consular office will become operational this summer.

"I have asked my collaborators, and they assured me, that all the conditions will be met for the consular office to become operational by the beginning of August, before summer is over. That gives us time to finish all works, including logistics, and we will also try to identify for hire qualified staff," added Comanescu.

Comanescu's schedule after the opening of the consular office included a round of talks with Ukrainian state officials, including Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, as well as a meeting with officials of the Romanian community of Transcarpathia.

Discussed during the talks were cross-border cooperation between Romania and Ukraine, infrastructure developed in the common border area and interpersonal relations, as well as capitalising on the contributions of the national minorities to consolidate bilateral ties between Romania and Ukraine.

The signing of an agreement between the Romanian Government and Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers on repealing visa fees for long stays.
