Romania supports Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations
The Foreign Ministry's Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs Daniel Ionita met on Friday with Georgia's First Deputy State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Archil Karaulashvili, voicing on the occasion Romania's support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
"The Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs reiterated Romania's readiness to back Georgia in the process of political association and economic integration with the EU, including by concrete support in implementing the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement and by supporting the removal of EU visa requirements for Georgia citizens on a merit-based approach. Similarly, Romania further pronounces for attaching increased attention to the eastern neighborhood of the North Atlantic Alliance, supporting the adoption of political and practical measures capable to lead to Georgia's rapprochement to NATO, welcoming the substantial progress achieved by Georgia in the Euro-Atlantic integration process, encouraging Tbilisi to maintain its level of commitment in the light of the upcoming NATO Summit in Poland," reads a Foreign Ministry release to AGERPRES.
According to the cited source, Daniel Ionita reiterated the principled stance for the peaceful, negotiated solving of the protracted conflicts in Georgia, based on international law and under observance of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
The sides also expressed satisfaction at the very good political dialogue between Romania and Georgia, reflected also in the consistent support provided by Romania for Georgia's firmly confirmed options for European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
Secretary of State Daniel Ionita said that the meeting provided an opportunity to deepen Romania — Georgia cooperation overall, including in the economic sector. He pointed to Romania and Georgia's access to the Black Sea as a catalyst for capitalizing on cooperation opportunities, citing the importance of turning into reality joint energy and transport inter-connectivity projects (the Azerbaijan — Georgia — Romania — Hungary gas interconnector and the Black Sea — Caspian Sea corridor).
In his turn, the Georgian official praised Romania's firm support for Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, thanking Romania for its substantial participation in the Alliance efforts to strengthen Georgia's security and support reforms in this line and for the contribution to the implementation of the EU — Georgia Association Agenda.
The Georgian official payed a working visit to Romania.
