Romanian ForMin with concern notes 'vote' expressed by Transdniester self-styled 'Supreme Soviet\\\'
The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry is with concern noting the 'vote' expressed on April 16 by the self-styled 'Supreme Soviet' in Tiraspol in favour of making moves for recognizing the independence of the Transdniester region and for it to join the Russian Federation, a release says on Wednesday.
The foreign ministry backs the position voiced by the Republic of Moldova's government on this issue, namely that the decision made by Transdniester is a direct defiance of the process aimed at reaching a settlement to the Transdniester conflict and a defiance of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and also a unilateral and counter-productive action.
'Such initiatives run counter the fundamental principle of the political settlement to the Transdniester matter, to which all the participants in the 5+2 negotiation format of this file have adhered. The more so now, amid the developments in Ukraine, there is need for all the sides to have a constructive approach and refrain from any unilateral actions that might be aimed at imposing solutions by shunning the negotiating framework. The Foreign Affairs Ministry hails the call of the Republic of Moldova\\\'s government to continuing the political dialogue with no pre-conditions\\\', the release said.
It added that Romanian top diplomat Titus Corlatean had a phone call Wednesday afternoon with Moldovan Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Natalia Gherman on this issue aimed at coordinating the moves.
\\\'Romania reiterates firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally-recognized borders and to this effect it will coordinate its actions with the EU and Euro-Atlantic partners\\\', the ministry underscored.
The Romanian foreign minister also had a phone call with Didier Burkhalter, the Swiss Confederation President and Foreign Minister, whose country is the OSCE 2014 chairman-in-office, the ministry announced. During the talk with the Swiss official, the Romanian minister highlighted \\\'the worrying situation created following the Tiraspol ‘Supreme Soviet\\\' decision and called for a fast involvement of the OSCE chairmanship-in-office\\\'.
\\\'The Foreign Affairs Ministry voices confidence that all the international players participating in the 5+2 format, the Russian Federation included will disallow the moves planned by Tiraspol and will publicly and unequivocally reaffirm their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova \\\', the release says.
The ministry added Romania pronounces for the continuation of the 5+2 negotiations with a view to reaching \\\'a viable political solution\\\' to Transdniester issue.
The 5+2 format gathers Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE, the Republic of Moldova and Tiraspol administration as well as the European Union and the United States representatives.
The Supreme Soviet - or the law-making body - in Tiraspol officially asked Moscow, President Vladimir Putin included to recognize Transdniester independence on Wednesday.
