Romania's education system figures in the 2015-2016 school/academic year were 3.642 million pupils, students and undergraduates alongside 237,400 educational staff, the equivalent of an average ratio of 15 students per teacher, show data released on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
In 2015-2016 school/academic year, the school population was 72.2pct of the relevant age group; 95.7pct of students attended public schools and 4.3pct private units. As regards the distribution by education level, the primary and secondary education has 47pct, high school 18.5pct, kindergarten and pre-school education 15.2pct. By gender, 50.3pct of students were males; by residence, 70.3pct were in urban schools.
Compared to the previous school year, vocational education was the only level on a growth (up by 17,900, to 68,700 students); it was still the less represented in the overall school population (1.9pct). Attendance dropped in high-schools (-53.500 pupils) and in kindergarten and preschools (-24.600 children). Also, 535,200 students/undergraduates were enrolled in the 2015-2016 academic years; 53.9pct of them were women. Women also have more weigh among the education staff (76.9pct overall).
Education facilities included 117,700 classrooms, aula and seminar rooms; 26,300 laboratories; 5,300 sports fields; 4,900 school workshops; 4,700 gyms; and 47 swimming pools. The number of graduates in the said period was 555,700 at all educational levels; 291,200 of them (52.4pct) were female.
