Situation in Romania will be debated in European Parliament

The European Parliament will debate, in the October plenum, on the violent protests of August 10, European MP Siegfried Muresan announced on Facebook. The premier of the respective country, in this case premier Viorica Dancila, can participate in such discussions.

The government has not announced yet whether the premier received an invitation to participate in debates at the European Parliament or will go there out of her own initiative.

“I confirm that in the first week in October, there will be a debate on the rule of law in Romania in the European Parliament plenum. That is the only thing established until now about that debate. Details will be established at the next conference of presidents of parliamentary groups on September 13. Most important is what the European Commission will have to say about the rule of law in Romania, since the Commission is the guardian of European treatises and can offer an objective evaluation. This is just one of the debates to be held about Romania in the next period of time. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament will have a debate with the vicepresident of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, about the situation in Romania,” European deputy Siegfried Muresan wrote on Facebook, on Thursday.

The decision to organize a debate on violences at the protest of August 10, in Victoria Square was unanimously made by the Conference of European Parliament Presidents, made of the leaders of political groups and the EP president. The suggestion was made by the Green group in the European Parliament.

On August 17, the leaders of the Green Group asked the European Commission to activate the mechanism of defence of the rule of law in Romania’ s case, in the context of violent anti-government protests held in Bucharest, The Guardian wrote.

Military prosecutors from the Prosecution of the High Court of Justice have recorded 770 complaints so far against gendarmes who participated at the August 10 protest.

“Following activities organized until today, September 3, 2018, in the case investigating the violent incidents from Victoria Square, there have been 770 penal complaints recorded with military prosecutions.”

On the other hand, prosecutors make investigations on aggressions against gendarmes at the August 10 meeting, as there have been several collective complaints, gathered in a single case.
