Study: approximately 50% of the Romanians watch TV programmes three hours of day, in 35% of the households have 3 TV sets

Almost half of the population of Romania (48%) spend between two and three hours per day watching TV during the week, the percentage dropping to almost a third (31%) during the weekend days, shows the result of the second edition of the study ‘ The consumption indicator TV in Romania – TVCI Romania’, presented on Wednesday in the International Digital Forum by Mihai Ursoi, general manager Astra Romania, Bulgaria and the Republic of Moldova.

On the other hand, in 35% of the households of Romania there are two TV sets, in 30% a number of3 TV sets and in 15% more than 4 TVsets. Only in 20% of the households there is one TV set.

At comparative level with the countries in the region, the statistical data show that, in Bulgaria in 38% of the households there are 2 TV sets, in 29% there are 3 TV sets and in 20% there is only one TV set. At the same time, in Moldova in 44% of the households there is one TV set and in 42% there are 2 TV sets and in only 10% there are 3 TV sets.

The study TVCI of this year show that, in proportion of 40% the Romanians are willing to pay a subscription of 24 lei to 33 lei more expensive for a supplement of 5 to 10 channels HD. In this context, the young people are more interested by the HD offer, two thirds of them aged between 18-34 years old being willing to pay more for HD which shows the opportunity for the local TV channels which want to invest in HD content relevant for the viewers.

The research shows that, in the Republic of Moldova, the main criteria for selection are:number of channels (22%) and the conviction there is no other choice (22%). Major differences in the motivation of the selection is seen in Bulgaria where the quality is more important (27%) and then the number of channels (22%).

At the level of preferences, the Romanians consider themselves fans of the channels of general audience, followed by the news and documentaries channels. At the top preferred TV, ProTV is the leader for general audience with 62% of the options, second and third are Antena 1 and Kanal D.

In Bulgaria, films and serials are at the top of preferences for HD watching, similar to the result of Romania, followed by documentaries (40%) sports and news (35% each). At the same time, the Moldavians in proportion of 76% have not heard of HD technology, so that we cannot consider as relevant the HD preference in relation to the content.

As regards the time spent watching TV the Romanians are fans, both during the week and during the weekend. From Monday to Friday, half of the Romanians watch 2-3 hours of TV programmes per day. During the weekend, the percentage drops to a third, and 7% of them do not watch TV at all during the weekend.

At comparative level, 44% of the Bulgarians spend two – three hours watching TV per day during the week, and 31% between 4 and 6 hours per day. During the weekend, 38% spend 4-6 hours watching TV, and 27% spend maximum 3 hours. On the other hand, more than half of the Moldavians (53%) spend between two and three hours per day watching TV and 16% spend 4 to 6 hours. At the end of the week, 33% of the Moldavians said that they spend their free time watching TV 2-3 hours, and 28% of them between 4 and 6 hours.

The study ‘TV Consumption indicator in Romania – TVCI Romania ’was made by Mercury Research forAstra Romania at the end of April 2016 on a sample representative at national level, of 400 people aged over 18,users of TV services. The error margin of the study is +/- 5% with a trust level of 95%.
