The crisis of the immigrants: the EU was not sufficiently prepared as regards the intelligence services ( former European diplomat)

The European Union should do more as regards the crisis of the immigrants and should have been better prepared from the point of view of intelligence services, stated the former European diplomat for the Balkans Stefan Lehne, according to the Tanjurg agency. ‘ The EU was not quick enough to understand what happens in the region. It should have been better prepared and do more as regards the intelligence services’ he stated on Monday for the Serbian daily Danas.

However, we cannot deny the fact that the dimension of the issue is without precedent- over 160,000 people entered the EU in July only, which has never happened before, Lehne said. He expressed his hope that, over the next two or three weeks, there will be a foundation to offer solutions to this issue.
As regards Hungary’s decision to raise a fence at the border with Serbia, Lehne said that such decisions lead to the escalation of the crisis, not to its solution.

He also showed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the EU and the member states did nothing to solve the Syrian crisis. ‘I am disappointed by the way in which the international community, including the EU and the UN covered this issue’ Lehne, associated member of the Carnegie Endowment and former political manager in the Austrian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
