Volker Bouffier, Prime Minister of the German Federal Land Hesse, received at the Cotroceni Palace

President Klaus Iohannis welcomed at the Cotroceni Palace on Thursday Volker Bouffier, Prime Minister of the German Federal Land Hesse, taking the opportunity to plead for fresh German investments in Romania.

The German official was accompanied at the meeting with the Romanian head of state by Land Parliament President Norbert Kartmann and other officials of the land.

According to a Presidential Administration release, the talks focused on possibilities to consolidate cooperation between Romania and the Land of Hesse, including by establishing, at the proposal of the Romanian side, a joint committee on bilateral collaboration, with working groups in various areas, with a focus on the economic component. The Hesse officials accepted the proposal.

"President Klaus Iohannis pleaded for fresh investment inflows from Germany's Land of Hesse, presenting the favorable prospects of the Romanian economy," the release reads.

Moreover, both sides underscored the importance of the Romanian community, the fourth-strongest in the Land of Hesse, and that of the German community of Romania.

The two officials also discussed the migration phenomenon Europe is facing.

In context, President Iohannis presented Romania's main stand in this case, underscoring the consistent and solidary contribution of the country to the European effort, based on the voluntary contribution principle and taking into account the existing national capacities.

Moreover, they underscored the need to solve the profound causes of the recent migration phenomenon, by finding solid solutions to the crisis in Syria and by supporting the sustainable development of the migration source-areas in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

The two officials also talked about the situation in the Eastern Neighborhood, mostly that of Ukraine. President Iohannis reiterated Romania's stand according to which the EU sanctions on Russia must be kept until the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements. He also mentioned the need for the EU to further support the reforms in Ukraine.
