PM Ciuca: Romania has energy resources to cover present, future needs of citizens and economy

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca coordinated, on Friday, the meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group for Energy Security (GLISE), which analysed the situation of natural gas reserves, the preparation of stocks for the next period and the status of investment projects to increase energy production and storage capacity.

According to a press release issued by the Executive, the measures taken by the Government ensure the natural gas reserves necessary for the consumption of citizens and the business environment.

"The degree of storage is currently at 49.5% of capacity, which guarantees the amount of consumption needed by the Romanian population and economy, regardless of weather conditions in the coming period. For the next period, including the cold season 2023-2024, Romania has the capacity to store more than 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas, a sufficient quantity even in conditions of increasing domestic consumption," the press release states.

The Working Group also analysed solutions for increasing energy production capacity, diversifying natural gas supply sources and increasing storage capacity, focusing on the preparation of investment projects financed from the Modernisation Fund and through the Three Seas Initiative, mechanisms that Romania is using to achieve its energy security objective.

"Romania has at its disposal the energy resources its citizens and economy need for the present and the future. What we have in storage today ensures the necessary consumption for the next period. We are already preparing the resources for the winter of 2023-2024, but also the solutions to supplement the amount of energy that Romania will need in the coming years to ensure the needs of a growing economy. The cooperation agreements established with foreign partners for the diversification of gas supply resources and the consistent investments in the area represent for Romania the solution to strengthen energy security," Prime Minister Ciuca said.

The GLISE meeting was also attended by Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu, Secretary General of the Government Marian Neacsu, Director General of Transgaz Ion Sterian, State Adviser in the Prime Minister's Chancellery George Agafitei, representatives of institutions with responsibilities in the energy area.
