The minister of energy: Romania is ready to stimulate investments in new production capacties in the domain of renewable and nuclear energy
Romania is interested in implementing a system of agreements for the purchase of electricity which could ensure predictibility on the market for a long term and stimulate investments in new capacities of production in the domain of renewable and nuclear energy, says the minister of energy, Virgil Popescu.
Similarly, the Romanian official spoke during the reunion about the importance of mechanisms of capacity to ensure the security in supply during emergency situations with the use of natural gas and coal included.
The minister took part, between 27 and 28 February 2023 in the informal reunion of the Council of Energy, organised in Stockholm, in a joint format with the Council of Transport, where the agenda included topical issues on the EU agenda in the domain of energy, such as the preparation of the reform of the electricity market and the competitiveness of the EU industry in the present global climate.
In this format, Popescu sent many thanks for the recent financing granted by the European Commission, through the programme Connecting Europe Facility, for the underground gas storage in Bilciuresti, worth approximately 37 million euro.
At the same time, in the session dedicated to the competitiveness of the European industry, Virgil Popescu mentioned the importance of protecting some critical sectors (chemical industry, oil and steel industry being important for Romania), fair treatment for the technologies which will benefit from support on the part of the EU and of a balanced geographical distribution for the new investments so that the European eastern region benefit from new projects.
According to him, the decarbonisation of transport will include aspects of infrastructure( charging points for electrical vehicles) where there is collaboration with the ministry of transport, and financial boosts fo the use of cleaner means.
'Romania is interested in the localisation of some critical industries such as production of batteries which could allow the development of the local market for electro-mobility with social, economic and environmental effects' the minister of energy said.
The next reunion of the Council of Energy will take place on 28th March, in Brussels.
