Romania to have a national database of mineral resources
Romania will have a national data base on mineral resources, with the approval of the Geological Research Programme by the Government, Anca Magdalena Chiser, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Economy, told a Monday's relevant forum.
"In recent years, the exploitation of Romania's resources has become the most important topic on the public agenda. The exploitation and the use of these exhausting natural resources must be done taking into account the fact that future generations must benefit from them as well, because in the situation of exhaustion of non-renewable sources, these cannot be re-created or recovered.
Thus, through the Geological Research Programme, recently approved in the Government, the Ministry of Economy aims at establishing a national data base on mineral resources in which to bring clarifications on prospects to identify new deposits leading to the completion of geological works in the areas with prospects for capitalizing on their reserves. This ambitious programme will outline the mineral resource perimeters of the primary energy class such as radioactive ores, coal, renewable energy resources in the class of geothermal waters and non-metallic mineral substances with significant added value," Chiser said.
"Today we need an integrated vision of fiscal policies." It is necessary to invest in infrastructure, to correlate external financing with the objective of re-industrialization. Coherence in the decision-making process is needed. The current Governing Programme aims at creating some investment instruments from public funds and I recall here the well-known Sovereign Investment Fund. This fund will target the development and financing of cost-effective and sustainable investment projects, being a financing mechanism that will identify and materialize investment opportunities with an impact on economic development and creation of new jobs in the long term. Another challenge for the Economy Ministry is increasing energy security. The expansion of the Black Sea continental shelf allows Romania to have access to important gas and oil reserves. According to some estimates by relevant specialists, by exploiting only its own resources, Romania could secure its independence in terms of gas resources for a period of 34 years. However, using only our own resources is not a real solution," Chiser said.
Regional policies in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and the Middle East are being debated in Bucharest, September 25 to 26, as part of the largest regional economic event taking place annually in Romania - Forbes CEE Forum 2017.
