Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt: forces in the country continue to consider as appropriate the discreditation of the role of the German minority

The ambassador of Germany to Romania Cord Meier-Klodt  considers that some forces in the country continue to consider as appropriate the discreditation of  the role of the German minority in Romania, mentioning that it is about ‘individual voices’ who do not represent the opinion of the majority of the population.

Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt, said on Saturday at the symposium "Saxons' Adhesion Decision to the Union with Romania 100 Years On", that by the 100th anniversary of the Medias declaration one symbolically celebrates the entirety of the Romanian-German relations that "are unique in their way".

"At present, Germany is one of the most important partners of Romania, in almost every respect. And this is essentially due to the influence of the German minority, its existence as an ethnic group on these beautiful lands and up to its proverbial role as ?bridge' between our countries today, to which the Romanian-German Friendship Treaty of 1992 also refers," the German diplomat said.

In the opinion of Ambassador Cord Meier-Klodt, the regions where Germans have lived for centuries and where German schools existed and still exist, the university education lines in German and vocational education in line with the German dual model are now enjoying great economic success.

He mentioned several initiatives of Germany in Romania - the program to support teachers in German schools as a mother tongue, the building, expansion and maintenance of German schools, strengthening cooperation in the field of research and university, mentioning that our country wants such programs.

"Romania needs and wishes today all this, and perhaps today more than ever, and that is why we defend this legacy today, together, and with firmness against hostile defamation and attitudes. Of course, for the sake of the minority itself, but for the good of our entire Romania, for the good of our Romanian-German friendship and for the good of our common Europe, of Europe's common values, now, at Romania's takeover of the first presidency of Romania at the Council of the European Union," said Cord Meier-Klodt.

The German Ambassador to Romania attended on Saturday the Symposium "Saxons' Adhesion Decision to the Union with Romania 100 Years On", organized by Stephan Ludwig Roth Theoretical High School in Medias by the German Democratic Forum in Romania and the Hanns-Seidel Foundation.
