Ambassador Klemm: the main threat for NATO comes from Russia
The US ambassador to Romania Hans Klemm stated on Friday in Timisoara that the main threat for NATO comes from Russia, the US and Romania having to continue collaboration for the promotion of the security of the two countries, sends the Mediafax correspondent.
According to him, the conflicts in Ukraine and the situation of Crimea represent ‘ serious threats’ for the security and peace in Europe as well as of the trans-Atlantic area.
‘Starting from the instructions which I was given by president Obama and the consultations I had with the Senate of the US I identified several priorities for my work in Romania. One refers to the promotion of the security of these two countries –the US and Romania. Both are members of the NATO and we have a lot of joint efforts, together with other allies, in the context of the threats we face both Romania and the US. In the last years, the main threat for NATO, and there are no reasons why we should hide this, comes from Russia. We are talking about the conflicts in Ukraine, about the situation in Crimea, which presents radically the military capacities of Russia, both east of NATO and in the Black Sea. They represent serious threats for the security and the peace of Europe and of the whole trans-Atlantic area’ Klemm said.
This added that in the future US and Romania will continue collaboration in Iraq as well.
‘We have a strategic partnership between Romania and the US through which we tried to offer the security of Europe but we fought together far away from Romania in Bosnia, in Kosovo, in Iraq, in Afghanistan (…). At the same time, Romania and the US will collaborate very soon in Iraq as well. Similarly, we work together in the domain of the cyber security and not only’ Klemm said.
He was on Friday in Timisoara where he talked to the students of the Universitate de Vest in Timisoara.
