CSM: negative opinion on a bill amending justice legislation
At a plenary meeting on Thursday, the Supreme council of Magistrates (CSM) decided by a majority vote to issue a negative opinion on a bill amending justice legislation.
According to a CSM press statement, 10 votes were cast for issuing a negative opinion, while eight were cast for a positive opinion with observations.
"The arguments and reasons behind the negative opinion will be drafted in legal terms, notified to the Ministry of Justice and posted on the official website of the CSM," according to the press statement.
Presidential spokesperson Madalina Dobrovolschi in Thursday said that President Klaus Iohannis took note of the Supreme Council of Magistrates (CSM) opinion on the justice legislation, stressing that the government and Parliament cannot ignore this signal.
"The President of Romania has taken note of the CSM assessment, which is identical to his own analysis. The President considers that CSM, as a guarantor of the independence of the judiciary, has thoroughly and with great professional judgment assessed the proposals of the justice minister before rejecting them. Although this is an advisory opinion, the government and Parliament cannot ignore this clear signal from the CSM," Dobrovolschi told journalists at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
President Klaus Iohannis stated on Thursday that Romania is a stable country, with an evermore consolidated democracy, that determinedly leads the anti-corruption fight, even if "some politicians haven't dealt with that thought yet."
"I forthrightly declare that Romania is a stable country and safe both for its citizens and our international partners. In almost three decades since the fall of communism, we have become important members of the European Union and NATO and today we are a provider of security and stability in the region. Moreover, Romania is a country with an expanding economy becoming a pole of attraction for many Romanian and foreign investors. We have an ever stronger democracy, with an anti-corruption fight that we lead with determination and great results, even if some politicians haven't dealt with that thought yet," the head of state said at the "United Way Roundtable On Philanthropy" event, taking place in Bucharest.
He underscored that eradicating the corruption scourge is an essential condition to build "a just society, with an equitable distribution of resources among its citizens."
