Excise taxes introduced on gold, platinum, furs, powerful cars, yachts, guns and ammunition
The Ministry of Public Finance (MFP) will introduce as of September 1 excise duties on gold and platinum jewelry - wedding bands excepted - of 1 euro per gram for less than 14K gold, and two euros per gram for gold over 14K, provides a Government Urgency Ordinance adopted at the end of July.
Other luxuries too will be subject to excise duties as of September 1.
Natural fur garments with a cost below 1,500 euros will be subjected to an excise duty of 50 euros, with the tax increasing gradually to 1,200 euros for furs priced over 6,000 euros.
New and used (imported) cars with engines of more than 3,000 cc will be charged an excise duty of 1 euro per cc for the engine capacity exceeding the aforementioned limit.
A gradual excise tax will be applied on firearms: 50 euros for a price below 500 euros, with the tax going as high 1,500 euros for weapons as pricey as 6,000 euros; cartridges will also be charged an excise tax of 0.1 - 0.4 euros apiece, depending on the price category.
Sailing vessels longer than 8 metres will be charged an excise duty of 500 euros per meter of length, while the excise for motor yachts will be 10 euros per hp if the engine is over 100 horsepower.
Excise duties on alcohol will increase from 750 euros per hectolitre to 1,000 euros per hectolitre.
The rise in excise duties on certain luxury goods and the introduction of new excise duties for other goods is intended to offset the possible impact on budget revenues of the cutback from 24% to 9% of the VAT on bread. Additional revenues from excise duties are estimated at RON 300 million by the end of 2013.
