Foreign direct investments drop more than 13 pct in H1 2023
Direct investments in Romania by non-residents dropped by more than 13 percent in H1 to 3.93 billion euros compared to 4.533 billion euros in the same period of 2022, according to data released on Monday by the National Bank of Romania.
Equity (reinvested earnings included) totaled a net 4.283 billion euros, while intercompany lending recorded a negative net value of 353 million euros.
According to data centralized by the National Trade Registry Office, the number of newly set up companies running on foreign capital in Romania was by 0.5 percent higher in H1 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, at 3,493.
The 3,493 new entities had a paid-up capital of 21.277 million dollars, 5.1 percent lower than the 20.242 million dollars registered for the businesses incorporated over January - June 2022.
As many as 580 companies with foreign contributions to the capital were registered in June 2023. By activity fields, most registrations were in wholesale and retail trade, car and motorcycle repair (28.45 percent of the total), professional, administrative, scientific and technical activities (18.97 percent) and transport, warehousing and communications (16.38 percent).
As of the end of June 2023, there were 247,708 companies with foreign participation in Romania, with an aggregate paid-up capital of 68.432 billion dollars.
The largest number of companies running on foreign capital involved investors from Italy, specifically 52,270 (with a paid-up capital of 4.047 billion dollars), but the Netherlands ranks first by the amount of equity with 12.663 billion U.S. dollars in 5,974 companies.
