MAE: Romania strictly observing highest arms export control standards
Romania is strictly observing the highest standards of arms export control, included in its domestic legislation, the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) points out in a statement
MAE makes these clarifications following foreign media reports on Wednesday on arms exports from Central and Eastern European countries to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Turkey.
"Romania is strictly observing the highest arms export control standards, including in its domestic legislation, reflecting the international commitments pledged by the country as an EU, NATO, UN and OSCE member, as well as a state which is part to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT)," the MAE says.
According to the statement, the national control authority approves export licenses following rigorous analysis.
"The national control authority approves export licenses following rigorous analysis of the criteria included in the Council Common Position 2008/944/CFSP and ATT and only after the end user produces assurances, commitments also certified by the relevant authorities in the destination countries. These assurances include, among others, international certificates of import, end-use certification, delivery confirmations, re-export clauses," the MAE says.
It also points out that the military technology and equipment Romania exports are included in annual and quarterly reports posted on www.ancex.ro.
"We underscore that the military products exported by our country are included in annual and quarterly reports posted on the www.ancex.ro website that are also sent to the EU, the UN and the OSCE. Basically, these reports show the value and quantity of the Romanian exports of military components, technology and equipment," says MAE.
According to the MAE, Romania participates in any investigation into the traceability of some arms that could come from it.

Eastern European countries, Romania included, have approved the discreet sale of more than 1 billion euro of weapons in the past four years to Middle Eastern countries that are known to ship arms to Syria, an investigation by UK's The Guardian newspaper has purportedly found.
